Last week I traveled to L.A. for a six day photo assignment to cover the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games for CrossFit Media. My schedule was jammed packed with media meetings, on-location shoots and concluded with the three-day Games competition hosted at the Home Depot Center. I hit the ground running Tuesday morning capturing behind the scene images of athlete briefings and venue set-up at the Manhattan Beach Marriott, the official 2012 CrossFit Games hotel. The athletes were informed of a surprise competition to be held at Camp Pendleton’s Base in San Clemente. So, Wednesday morning I traveled to the Dana Point Marina, climbed aboard a boat with an ESPN video crew and set out to cover the swim portion of the “swim, bike, run” morning event. It was a fun experience to shoot from the boat and provide a different perspective of the event. One highlight of the trip was witnessing a school of dolphins running along side our boat when heading back to the marina.
On Friday morning the intense three-day competition at the Home Depot Center kicked off. I captured the action with my standard gear, but also shot with the new Canon 400 f2.8L IS II lens. This lens was amazing and after an hour carrying it around the venue, I was very happy they reduced the weight by three pounds. I have thousands of images to look through and will release some of my top picks in a few months. In the meantime my facebook page will be updated as CrossFit, Inc posts galleries of the events.
Here is a photo story of my experience.

Way to go, Nicole. Love the stories and the pictures!
Thank you Lauren!
Awesome, as always! Love the sunrise pic!
Thanks for sharing your experience – I’m a member of Crossfit Omaha and volunteered to take photos at a metro workout fundraiser this weekend. I have several photo visions and desires on what I want to capture – but finding your sight via Google has both confirmed and open my eyes to different perspectives and scenes to capture – thanks! Signed up to follow – look forward to seeing what’s next.
Thanks for checking out my work JC. Have fun shooting.
Also had one pic make the crossfit.com main page –

Look forward to seeing more of your work – love the composition and unique subject perspectives!
Hey JC,
Congrats on the main site pic. I’m glad it’s not over processed and great job at stopping the action. It’s always nice to have an excited crowd behind the athlete, but be aware of judges cluttering the scene, which is very tough to do.
Keep shooting!
Nicole
