During the past month I have been traveling across the country covering the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Regional Games. The month long regional season touched 6 continents and consisted of 17 regional competitions. I had the opportunity to be the event photographer for 4 of these regions. The first stop was Chicago’s Navy Pier for the North Central Regional, which represented 11 states and 167 boxes (gyms). The industrial architecture provided a great backdrop for the images.
After Chicago I traveled back home to Washington D.C. to cover the Mid-Atlantic Regional, which consisted of 7 states and 219 boxes. George Mason University was the venue and their indoor track was a great addition to the competition.
My next stop was Columbus, OH, which represented 5 states and 132 boxes. The Ohio Expo Center provided another great industrial space which allowed the athletes to run indoors and outdoors.
The last stop was Boston for the North East Regional, which covered 8 states and 216 boxes. This was the first outdoor venue for me so I was excited about the photographic possibilities. Since it was held at Reebok headquarters I had the opportunity to take a few photos from the roof and gain a unique perspective of the competition.
Over 30,000 images were taken during the four weeks covering the same six events for CrossFit teams and individual women and men. My personal challenge was to find new creative angles to capture movements I have photographed a thousand times before. The 2011 Reebok CrossFit Regionals was a success and I wish all the athletes luck at the Games in California. I look forward to seeing who is crowned “The Fitness Man and Women on Earth”.
Oh, and if you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes, here is a sneak peak of one of the nicest media rooms we had. If I wasn’t on the field covering the great athletic achievements, I was busy here editing images.
